What to Expect From Your First Session With a Private Trainer

What happens in a first private training session: the conversation, the movement check, the workout and the plan that follows.

Your first private training session is a short conversation about your goals and history, a look at how you move, and a real but manageable workout. With Miami Private Fitness, that first 60-minute session is complimentary.

New clients only. One complimentary session per person.

What happens before the session?

You share your goals, the place you would like to train and the times that suit you. If you are training in your building gym, check whether your building has a guest-trainer process. That is all the preparation needed.

What does the first conversation cover?

The first few minutes are about you: what you want to change, what training you have done before, what has or has not worked, how many days a week you can realistically train, and any injuries or health considerations Tim should know about.

Be honest. A program built on accurate information is safer and works better than one built on what you think a trainer wants to hear.

Is there an assessment?

Yes, but not a test you can fail. Tim watches how you squat, hinge, push, pull and balance, and how you handle a little conditioning. He is looking at range of motion, control and where effort shows up. This tells him where to start each exercise, not what you are capable of long-term.

Will you actually train in the first session?

Yes. The movement check flows straight into a workout scaled to your level. You should finish feeling like you worked, not wrecked. Expect some muscle soreness a day or two later if you are new or returning to training; that is normal and fades as you adapt.

What should you bring and wear?

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in and supportive training shoes
  • A water bottle and a small towel
  • Anything your building requires for gym access
  • For outdoor sessions: sunscreen and a hat

What happens after the first session?

Tim outlines what your program would look like, how often he would suggest training and which package fits that rhythm. There is no pressure to decide on the spot. Many people take a day to think about their schedule before choosing.

What questions should you ask during the first session?

The first session is your chance to interview your trainer as much as theirs to learn about you. Useful questions include:

  • How would my program change over the first month?
  • What should I do on days we are not training together?
  • How will we know I am making progress?
  • What happens if I travel or my schedule changes?

What if you are nervous or out of shape?

That is exactly who a first session is designed for. Everything is scaled to where you are today. You will not be asked to do anything you are not ready for, and you can say so if an exercise does not feel right. Most people find the hour passes quickly and finish feeling more confident than when they started.

How should you prepare the day before?

Sleep as well as you can, eat normally, and avoid a very hard workout the day before so you arrive fresh. Have a light meal or snack a couple of hours beforehand. If you are training in your building gym, confirm any guest registration your building needs, and let Tim know the access details so the session starts on time without anyone waiting in the lobby.

Most people leave knowing exactly what the next few weeks will involve, which makes the decision far easier.

How do you know it is the right trainer?

Pay attention to whether you were listened to, whether instructions were clear, and whether the workout felt matched to you rather than generic. Those are the signs of coaching that will keep working.
